Singapore, 1 December 2018 – Visitors to the Singapore Sports Hub revelled in the festive ambience of the Christmas light-up, as over 20,000 played, participated and gave to charity on the first of the two-day festive edition of the Sports Hub Community Play Day. Themed “Season of Giving”, visitors participated in a host of activities including a series of carnival rides and games, an inflatable playground, sports try-outs, film screenings, stage performances and an inclusive runway show with opportunities to donate to charity.

Guest-of-Honour Ms Sim Ann, Senior Minister of State for Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth, graced the event and oversaw the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Singapore Sports Hub and Republic Polytechnic (RP). The MOU sets the framework for the collaboration between both organisations, in facilitating training of RP students and staff through the support of Singapore Sports Hub’s events initiatives.

Mr Oon Jin Teik, Chief Executive Officer, Singapore Sports Hub, said, “The Sports Hub Community Play Day is most befitting for the signing and announcement of the MOU because both organisations have entered this agreement to facilitate the research, planning, and discussions to collaborate on activities such as Sports Hub Community Play Day. Such an event – as well as other initiatives – is a great way for students and staff to gain industry experience through the planning and execution of large-scale events.”

Besides the Sports Hub Community Play Day, the MOU will see Singapore Sports Hub and RP work together on plans for the second phase of our Sports, Arts and Heritage Trail project; an Industry Attachment Scheme; the training for RP students to perform supporting roles at Singapore Sports Hub; and student internships with the Venue and Events team. Numerous students from RP have already embarked on internships with Singapore Sports Hub, and the MOU will see more opportunities for them.

19-year-old, Abdul Fattah, an intern from the School of Hospitality, said, “The internship has exposed me to many different aspects of operating a venue. It has been a challenge moving from theory to industry experience, but, overall, I would describe this experience as a fruitful one as I have learned new skills which will be beneficial for myself in the future.”

22-year-old, Muhd Irfan Mazlan, an intern from the School of Sports, Health and Leisure, said, “It has been an enriching experience, learning how to plan and execute the various types of events such as the Sports Hub Community Play Day today, and the Japan Summer Festival back in September. There was a steep learning curve for me in learning how to execute events, because in school we focus more towards planning. This makes the internship extra special!”

FESTIVE FUN AND FITNESS

Throughout the day, families and visitors of all ages toured the different booths on site and witnessed public stage performances by acts such as Grandma Mary and Band, whose 82-year-old lead guitarist is renowned for performing at NDP 2017, and OnWheels Dance Group, a wheelchair dance group. There were also opportunities for participation in the various mass fitness activities and sports try-outs:

  • Archery Target Shooting, a test of skill and accuracy with the bow and arrow;

  • Nerf Obstacle, an obstacle challenge involving Nerf guns;

  • Tchoukball 2-v-2, a game combining volleyball and squash;

  • and Fitness Marathon by Giordano G-Motion, a two-and-a-half hour exercise session that takes participants through Zumba, Cardio Blast as well as Fit-N-Joy.

The young and young-at-heart were also able to explore their creativity through arts and craft workshops involving creating one’s scented stone, seashell art, and others.

40-year-old mother of two, Lisa Ng, who attended the event with her son aged 8 and daughter aged 10, said, “This is my third time at Sports Hub Community Play Day. The event is always enjoyable for myself and my family as there would be games and carnival rides for the young to enjoy, as well as activities for adults to take part in. For example, today I was able to make my own leather keychain!”

MAKING A DIFFERENCE FROM THE RUNWAY TO THE RUNNING TRACK

Earlier in the day, the first of two runs scheduled for this edition of the Sports Hub Community Play Day took place in the morning. The Believe B60 Charity Run organised by the Warriors Running Club in support of Care Community Services Society (CCSS) does not have registration fees but runners had to make a minimum donation. All of the funds collected excluding third-party admin fees goes directly to CCSS.

A second run, Santa Run for Wishes, takes place tomorrow, 2nd December, at 7am. Proceeds from the run benefits the Make-A-Wish Foundation® (Singapore), with the purpose of supporting children with life-threatening conditions.

The Fashion for a Social Cause Runway thrilled the public in the afternoon with a special presentation by more than 60 models, including talent with special needs. The showcase featured local designs sewn by the elderly, needy and underprivileged.

Ms Lilian Lye, Marketing Director, Singapore Sports Hub, said, “Singapore Sports Hub are advocates of giving back to the community, and it was heart-warming to see our visitors and beneficiaries enjoying themselves at the event and bonding with their families. Apart from the various sporting and fitness activities which visitors can try out at the event, we also hope to encourage the public to do their part to give as a community so that it would be a meaningful experience for them."

The Sports Hub Community Play Day is a quarterly community engagement initiative aimed at bringing the community together and encouraging a more active lifestyle through sports and recreational activities. It is held in conjunction with Singapore Sports Hub Seasons of Giving from 27 November 2018 to 1 January 2019, featuring Christmas-themed activities such as Santa express mail box, Meet & Greet with Santa and a chance to win Disney on Ice tickets over the next few weekends.
