In total, the Singapore Sports Hub Stepper 2015 welcomed more than 1000 participants over two days, including 49 year-old Mr Baktiar Ithnin from Jurong West stepping his way to the finish line at today’s Stepper event
Singapore, 31 October 2015 – The second segment of the Singapore Sports Hub Stepper 2015 commenced today at the National Stadium. Based around the theme of Halloween, Mr Robert Abernethy, Deputy Managing Director of the Singapore Sports Hub, today flagged off the first wave of participants dressed up as ghosts and ghouls in the ‘Enduro Stepper’ category. Over 400 stepper enthusiasts’ ranging from children to the elderly took part in the event under the canopy of the world’s largest free-spanning dome.
The remaining categories that took place today were ‘Competitive Speed’ and ‘Kids Climb’ which saw friends and family cheering for their loved ones. Steve Chia, father of the youngest competitor to take part in today’s ‘Kids Climb’, attended the event with his wife and three children: “The event was well organised, even though the kids category had to be postponed due to the haze earlier in the month. As the kids have been training hard at home, we are really pleased that Sports Hub rescheduled and delivered a great event,” said Mr Chia.
Prior to today’s Singapore Sports Hub Stepper 2015, Singaporeans of all ages have been attending sessions every Thursday and Saturday at the Stadium Roar and National Stadium to train for the vertical challenge. From July this year, 18 training sessions were completed with over 450 participants joining in and climbing over 800,000 steps in preparation.
Children aged between 7 to 10 were each given a Halloween bag which they could use to collect candies and treats handed to them by event volunteers during their climb of the National Stadium. To celebrate participants finishing the Stepper challenge, a photo booth was available for families to snap “spooky” photographs together.
Winners of the event took home a medal and prizes worth more than $1,000, with all participants walking away with a Singapore Sports Hub ‘Stepper Pack’ valued over $200.
