For BTS fan Kacie Ng, buying fan merchandise as a student was a luxury.
But that didn’t stop her from expressing her love for the K-pop group as she turned financial constraints into the catalyst for a creative pursuit instead.
“I was a student and kind of broke, so instead of buying my own merchandise, I decided to make my own. There was a specific type of aesthetic I was looking for that others couldn’t create, so why not create my own,” the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) year two student said.
The self-taught designer now majors in graphic design after picking up the skill four years ago when she set up her BTS fan art account, tzu.studios.
“I wanted to take it further by creating a platform where I could share fan art,” said the 25-year-old who also used to write fanfiction of the group on original fiction publication site Wattpad.

Having been an ARMY, BTS’ official fandom name, since she was 13, Kacie often draws inspiration from the wildly popular boyband’s music.
“Their music helped me a lot, especially during my teenage years, which was a really hectic time. As a creative, I felt the lyricism very deeply, and it really resonated with me. I also found a lot of friends through the fandom, and that really helped me through those tough times.”
Amassing more than 5,000 followers on her Instagram page since its inception, Kacie has seen her art grow beyond K-pop, creating fan art inspired by popular anime series such as Kaiju No. 8, Solo Levelling and Frieren.
Her art has also taken up a variety of forms such as tote bags, keychains, prints and enamel pins.

“My buyers have said that enamel pins are like a mini piece of artwork that can be displayed, and I think that pins are the best representation of my artwork.”
Describing her art style as “whimsical and involving a lot of pastels”, Kacie’s favourite part of running her fan art platform is selling her work at community markets, where she gets to connect with other fans in person.

“When I am boothing, and I see actual people turn up – rather than just numbers on my social media platform – and they are telling me what they bought or how much they like my art, it really is the best thing that has happened to me as the owner of a small business.”
Selling her work online has also been a window to the world for her.
“People all around the world have bought from me. I get to see addresses from different countries, and it’s very interesting. Once, I had a customer from Cyprus; I didn’t even know of this country, and yet people are buying my work from this tiny red dot. It's times like these when my art feels global.”
Another memorable encounter was when one of her customers travelled to Gangneung, South Korea and took pictures of her “Spring Day” pin together with the iconic BTS bus stop.
“To see my pins travel all over the world, it’s really inspiring.”
And now, her artistic journey has also brought her to collaborate with The Kallang for their upcoming mobile app launch.
With EXO PLANET #6 - EXhOrizon in SINGAPORE set for the Singapore Indoor Stadium this July, Kacie was tasked with designing exclusive K-pop-themed Telegram stickers for app users.
“I really wanted to capture the feelings of being K-pop fan in the stadium, how it feels to go to a concert and scream your lungs out. I wanted to recreate that unique feeling.”
Having had prior experience making sticker sheets during an internship stint with the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre, Kacie was well-equipped for the task at hand and hoped to incorporate relatable moments and specific fan chants and dialogue into the end product.
“As someone who attends a lot of K-pop concerts in The Kallang, I want to capture the excitement of being in the stadium. One thing K-pop fans can relate to is the initial moment of walking into the Singapore Indoor Stadium from your gate and seeing all the light sticks. That scene just takes your breath away, sometimes more than the concert itself.”
Moving forward, Kacie, who has snagged tickets to December’s BTS concert at the National Stadium, hopes her platform can become a community to celebrate her unique artwork and artistry.
“I've always wanted to derive outside of fan art, because fan art is about celebrating the existing community that you're already in. I've wanted to create my own community, where people can bond together to talk about my art and celebrate it.”
Whether you're counting down to concert day, reliving post-concert emotions or reacting to your favourite idols, bring those shared experiences into your everyday conversation with an exclusive Telegram sticker pack, available on The Kallang app.
